From May 15 to 18, Amalfi welcomed the 70th Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics, one of the Mediterranean’s most fascinating and heartfelt traditions. An event rooted in history, when four great City States-Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa and Venice-that once vied for dominance over the sea but today united more than ever. A rivalry turned into a celebration of sports, culture and brotherhood.
Four cities, one great passion
During these days of celebration and tradition, the city was transformed into an open-air stage: cultural events, Historical Parade, meetings, music and, of course, the highly anticipated Regatta, with the beating heart of the competition enlivening every corner of the city, every balcony, every gaze turned toward the sea.
Amalfi welcomed its seafaring sisters with pride and passion, showing its authentic beauty, its ability to unite past and present in a tale that thrills year after year.
A 70-year tradition
Since the first edition of the Regatta, every year, the four republics take turns as host cities. Seventy years of rowing challenges, of parades in period costumes and colorful banners, of shouts of encouragement and bright eyes at the finish line.
The women’s race, the pageant, the story
Special excitement also accompanied the race with the women’s crew, who showed great determination and team spirit. Intense and engaging competition.
And then the most anticipated moment, the race between the Galleons, kept everyone in suspense until the last second. The boys, they gave everything: passion, strength, strategy, heart.
The Historical Procession enchanted those in attendance. The sumptuous clothes, the solemnity of the historical figures, and the rhythm of the drums told the glorious past of these Ancient City States that made history.
Amalfi, a special setting
This edition had a special flavor. Perhaps for the haunting beauty of its sights, perhaps for the welcome of its people, or perhaps for that energy that only Amalfi can give in its festive moments, not to mention the passage of the Amerigo Vespucci, the most beautiful ship in the world.
