Each year, the waters of one of the glorious City States come alive with the colors of the Regatta: period dresses parade during the procession, oars giving rhythm to the sea. It is the Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics, one of the most fascinating, evocative and above all followed historical reenactments in our country. But what is it all about? Let’s find out together in this article!

A plunge into the past

The first Regatta was organized in 1956, aimed at celebrating the glorious past of the four City States and their exploits: we are talking about Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa and Venice, the four Ancient Maritime Republics. These ancient states, were undisputed protagonists of maritime trade in the Mediterranean, opening trade routes, forging alliances and contributing to cultural exchange between East and West.

An exciting event

Today the Regatta is a rowing competition among crews of rowers aboard special galleons, each in the style and colors of the republic it represents. The challenge is held in rotation among the four cities, each year in a different one, thus giving fans, a chance to witness the event and the charm of each City State.

A true historical reenactment

But it is not just a sporting challenge; today the beating heart of the Regatta is what it represents: the four glorious maritime cities of Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa and Venice now meet no longer as rivals, but united by values of civilization, cultural identity and sport. Also spectacular is the procession with hundreds of costumed figures parading through the streets of the host city recreating scenes that take us back to the past of the four republics.

Why participate?

To attend the Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics is to live a unique and memorable experience, in which past and present are intertwined: amid oars that defy the waves, flags that wave proudly, and tales of a seafaring Italy that made history.
