5 Experiences to Live in Amalfi to Feel Like a “Local”

Small daily rituals, hidden places and authentic habits to discover Amalfi as those who live there do

If you really want to get to know Amalfi, don’t limit yourself to the more touristy destinations: try getting into the slow, genuine rhythm of the people who live, work and dream here every day. Among quiet alleys, ancient flavors and simple gestures, here are 5 experiences that will make you feel part of the local community, if only for a weekend.

1. Having breakfast in the square, amid glances and smiles

Amalfi_ Piazza DuomoFor Amalfitans, the day often begins with a coffee consumed standing at the counter in one of the historic cafes overlooking Piazza Duomo. But there are also those who indulge in a slower breakfast, watching the bustle of the square from the terrace of a café.

What to do as a local: Order a coffee accompanied by a sfogliatella or lemon delight, sit outside, listen to the conversations of passersby, and enjoy the morning air. Within minutes, you will already feel “at home.”

2. Shopping in downtown stores

Amalfi’s historic center is dotted with small grocery stores, greengrocers, bakeries, and stores selling local products. Locals frequent them every day, between banter with the shopkeeper and recipe exchanges.

What to do as a local: Walk into a small store selling lemons, cheeses or artisanal pasta, ask for advice, learn about the products of the day. Take away a bag of fennel taralli or a piece of aged caciocavallo cheese. It is a souvenir… to eat.

3. Entering a historic paper mill and touching the Amalfi Charter.

Many people do not know that a handmade paper is still produced in Amalfi using medieval methods. Amalfitans are proud of this craft tradition, passed down through the centuries.

What to do from local: Visit the Paper Museum, where you can see up close the ancient machines in operation and make a paper with your own hands. Amalfi paper is still used today for invitations, poems, and important letters. Touching it is like touching history.

4. Experience the sea outside of tourist schedules

For those who live in Amalfi, the sea is not just for summer diving. It is a daily companion: you watch it from the pier, listen to it at night, experience it even if only with your feet soaking in the sunrise.

What to do as a local: Go to the beach early in the morning or at sunset, when the bathers have left and the light is softer. Or get on a boat at sunset to see the coast from the sea. Many Amalfitans say their favorite time is when the sea becomes silent again.

5. 🍋 Visit a lemon grove and listen to the stories of the growers

Lemons are not just an aesthetic symbol of the Coast: they are history, work and identity. The families who grow the famous “Sfusati Amalfitani” preserve ancient knowledge, passed down from generation to generation, among pergolas, terraces and low walls.

What to do as a local: Book a guided tour of an authentic lemon grove (perhaps family-run), listen to the stories of those who have been working the land forever, and taste a homemade limoncello. You will realize that behind each lemon is a tale of resilience, passion and love for the land.

Tips: Don’t be in a hurry

Amalfi is not a town to check off a list. It is a place to inhabit, even if only for a few days. Slow down, observe, talk to those you meet, ask for a story. Every corner has something to tell, but only to those who know how to listen.
