The Feast of Saint Andrew in Amalfi — A Blend of Devotion, the Sea, and Identity

27 June

In Amalfi, there is a celebration that, more than any other, illustrates the deep connection between the city, its history, and its faith: the Feast of Saint Andrew, dedicated to the city’s patron saint, Saint Andrew the Apostle.

Twice a year— on June 27 and November 30 —Amalfi comes together and comes alive to pay homage to the saint, a central figure in the community’s religious and cultural tradition. The streets, the cathedral, and the square become the heart of a collective ritual that has been passed down for centuries.

The devotion to Saint Andrew in Amalfi dates back to 1208, the year in which the Apostle’s relics were brought to the city from Constantinople. Since then, Amalfi has proudly cherished this spiritual bond, turning the celebration into an event that draws large crowds every year.

The two festivals dedicated to the patron saint reflect two different sides of the city:

  • On June 27, the lively and spectacular summer festival commemorates the miracle of 1544, when Saint Andrew is said to have protected Amalfi from a pirate raid. It’s a day full of energy, tradition, and engagement.

  • On November 30, the day of the liturgical feast, Amalfi takes on a more contemplative and solemn atmosphere, in which spirituality and remembrance take center stage.

The Feast of Saint Andrew is much more than a religious tradition: it is a symbol of belonging, a shared history that lives on among the sea, the stones of the cathedral, and the hearts of the people of Amalfi.
