Perhaps not everyone knows that, on June 27 and November 30, Amalfi celebrates St. Andrew, its patron saint, and the town dresses up for the holiday.
\nIt is a special occasion, combining tradition, sacredness and spectacle, capable of captivating everyone, citizens and visitors alike. But what is it all about?<\/p>\n

\"\"A beloved tradition<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since 1208, when his relics were brought here from Constantinople, the fisherman apostle has been the focus of two solemn celebrations: a summer one (June 27) commemorating the 1544 miracle when he allegedly saved the city from a pirate attack, and a winter one (November 30), more intimate and spiritual, on the saint’s liturgical day.<\/p>\n

The heart of the festival: the Cathedral and the Crypt<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"The centerpiece of the celebrations is the majestic Amalfi Cathedral, dedicated specifically to St. Andrew. A solemn mass is held here, in the presence of civil and religious authorities, and from here the impressive procession starts with the statue of the saint carried on the shoulders, accompanied by songs, prayers and an entire community in celebration.<\/p>\n

The most anticipated moment: the statue ride<\/strong>
\nOne of the most scenic acts of the celebration is the running of the statue of St. Andrew down the monumental steps of the cathedral amid the applause of the crowd. It is a spectacular gesture and an act of faith.<\/p>\n

The seaside party<\/strong><\/p>\n

After the procession, the celebration moves over the sea and into the sky: marching bands, illuminated boats along the coast, and above all, fireworks over the sea provide one of the most exciting moments of the Amalfi summer.<\/p>\n

The Feast of St. Andrew is not just a religious event: it is a total and traditional experience. It is to see Amalfi at its most authentic, between history, legend, devotion and spectacle.<\/p>\n
