The village of Pogerola stands on the hill of Monte Falconcello that stands over the historical centre of Amalfi to the west, and which boasts lush nature and breathtaking views of both the sea and the mountains.<\/p>\n

The place name Pigellula<\/em> comes from the word \u201cpigella\u201d, the name for a round terracotta plate, used to place bread in the oven.<\/p>\n

Pogerola was once a castle of which only part of the walls and two towers remain today.<\/p>\n

The area has some medieval churches, such as the church of Santa Marina Vergine<\/a> and those of S. Michele Arcangelo<\/a> and Madonna delle Grazie<\/a>, from where you can climb the steps that lead to Amalfi. Another visit worthy of mention is the Church of the Madonna dei Fuondi<\/a>, dating back to 1700 and located on a promontory behind the ‘Gaudio’ district, an ancient fortified estate. The production of nails known as \u201ccentrelle\u201d was once a flourishing business here.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
