Tour description<\/strong><\/p>\n

The itinerary explores the village of Pogerola<\/a>, a hamlet of Amalfi located on the hill of Mount Falconcello. The place name Pigellula<\/em> comes from pigella, which is a round earthenware dish used for baking bread.<\/p>\n

The trail is divided into two parts: the first is a nature trail that through an uphill staircase path leads to the Chiesa della Madonna dei Fuondi<\/a>, dating back to the 1700s and located on a promontory behind the locality of “Gaudio,” an ancient fortified fund that once flourished greatly for the production of nails, called “centrelle.”<\/p>\n

A small bas-relief depicting the Madonna and Child is kept on the altar of the Church of Our Lady of the Fuondi. The story goes that \u201cil Bambino\u201d was found by some workers from Agerola on the Fuenti beach in Cetara, who decided to bring it to their town church. While walking toward Agerola, once they reached the place where the church stands today, they were forced to stop due to the weight of the bas-relief, which was becoming increasingly heavy. This was interpreted as an indication from the Madonna of where the new chapel was to be built. La Madonna dei Fuondi is celebrated on the third Sunday of Easter. On this occasion, the faithful go on a pilgrimage to the church to pay homage to the Virgin Mary.<\/p>\n

The second part of the tour, on the other hand, consists of a visit to the center of Pogerola and its main points of interest, such as: the Church of Santa Marina Vergine<\/a>, the Castrum Pigellulae<\/em><\/a> of which only part of the walls and two towers remain today, and the Church of St. Michael the Archangel<\/a>.<\/p>\n
